Ready for Retinol

Like any skincare enthusiast I’m very intrigued by retinol. Hailed the only product that can actually reduce signs of ageing – this is something I associate with the Skin Serious.

I’ve toyed with retinol in the past but not very religiously. A while back the Pixi Retinol Tonic was a fave toner of mine, and I also dabbled with the Disciple Skincare Dreamy Skin Retinyl Oil for a while. But I was never really that concerned about it and they subsequently dropped out of the routine. But I always knew it would be on the horizon again. And here we are! I turn 23 in a couple of weeks and although in some senses this is still young, I always prefer prevention over cure.

But what is retinol?

Well in short it’s vitamin A. According to Caroline Hirons, the queen of skincare, this is an antioxidant which aids the prevention of free-radical damage whilst also exfoliating and boosting collagen production. It also helps with wrinkles, lack of elasticity, uneven texture and has anti acne benefits.

One of my biggest ‘problem’ areas for me is my under eyes. I’m very conscious of the fine lines that have crept there over the years. They also have a tendency to become dry and sensitive if not properly protected by a good quality eye cream. I cannot live without it and am always on the hunt for the best I can get my hands on. I mentioned in my latest skin post how I was on the look out for something new in the eye department, so with this coupled with low funds I finally decided to give Beauty Pie a go. And here came the discovery of retinol eye cream! AKA the answer to my prayers.

Beauty Pie

is a subscription service which allows you to purchase luxury beauty products for a fraction of the retail price. They boast incredible, powerful ingredients and formulas but without the added price of marketing, middlemen etc. Amazing.

So of course I purchased the Super Retinol Anti Wrinkle Eye Cream. I also decided to give the Super Retinol Night Renewal Moisturiser a whirl. This contains vitamin C for brightening effects and shea butter to soften the skin overnight. While they both contain slow release retinol and hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate. This also reduces the risk of irritation or peeling often associated with retinols. They both feel super luxurious and creamy, with the eye cream a lighter, softer texture while the night moisturiser is on the heavier side. As someone used to using oils at night, I quite like the feeling of a thicker moisture barrier for overnight, and waking up with soft skin – so this is great! I use the eye cream twice a day and it’s slowly healing up my dry patches without irritating or stinging the skin.

I also love that these both come in a tube with a pump allowing the product to stay clean and contained. It also minimises the wastage as you can deposit exactly how much product you need. I only use about half a pump for my eyes and two pumps for my face and neck.

The thing with retinol is, it takes a while to work. For me this now feels like an added bonus to these products, despite being the original main selling point. In the case of my face I don’t really expect to notice any visible results. Although I do hope it will reduce any potential breakouts. Whereas under my eyes, the only area really where wrinkles are forming, I’m super excited to see if any changes occur. And hopefully it’ll be worth the wait!

It’s also important to note you must use SPF during the day when using retinol for extra protection!

You can never rule out getting wrinkles around the eyes as you get older, but I prefer to call them laughter lines. 😂😂
