Strawberry fields

It has been an annual tradition in my family to go strawberry picking at Over Farm for as long as I can remember. Each year we leave with far more than we can eat, but they always taste the best of the season. There is nothing like walking down each row and choosing which fruits you think will taste the sweetest, be the juiciest and have the most vibrant colour. And so that is exactly what we experienced this weekend.

The summer sun beating down and the country breeze wafting the sweet scent of strawberries in the air.

Strawberry picking is one of mine and my sisters favourite summer activities… although we usually let our mum do all the work for us haha. We get far too tempted to eat each strawberry we pick rather than placing it in our baskets. This farm also grows raspberries for picking – hence the raspberry photograph – but our main aim was strawberries.

Strawberries are thought to be a member of the rose family and are one of the only fruit which have their seeds on the outside of them. They are high in fiber and a 100g portion contains 97% of our vitamin C RNI. I also once read strawberries can be used to whiten your teeth. So not only do strawberries taste good and scream summer, they are also very good for you.

Strawberry picking is one of the stand out summer memories I have and will always continue to do. There’s nothing like strawberries in summer and now all we need are some fresh scones, jam and cream.

If there’s one thing you do this summer, make sure it’s to go strawberry picking.

Thank you for reading,
