Recently I decided I’d had enough of my hair. It was far too long for me anymore – probably the longest it’s ever been – and I wanted something new and fresh. I decided I wanted to have it chopped off! I then started thinking about all my hair which would be thrown away and gone to waste. I remembered how people often donate their hair to charities which make them into wigs for people who have hair loss due to cancer treatment and alopecia.
I had a look online and came across the charity the Little Princess Trust. This charity makes wigs for boys and girls in the UK suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment. Along with hair donations they also raise money for wigs. The website says that each child is provided their new wig for free. Sometime’s they don’t have suitable donated hair available for children and so the charity has to purchase the wigs. This can cost them around £350 – £500 per wig, thus money donation is just as important as hair donation.
I decided I would donate 7/8 inches of hair to the charity whilst also raising a target of £100. In reality I chopped off 9 inches and am really close to my target but not quite there ha! So if anyone would like to donate, both me and the charity I’m sure would really appreciate it. If you’d like to donate to me you can do so here.
Cancer isn’t an illness which has affected me personally. I know it is an illness which affects many people and I would hate to imagine a child waiting for a wig only to find they cannot be provided with one as the charity did not have enough money or donated hair available. If you’re at all considering donating your hair – do it! Your hair will grow back so what do you really have to lose? Something which would usually be thrown away could mean the world to someone else. Just something to think about.
If you’d like to learn more about the charity you can do so here.
Anyways here are a few pictures of my hair donation process!
My hair before the cut
Why I never brush my hair haha
My hair sectioned into plaits and measured to find the right length – 9 inches!
The first cut!
The hair to be donated
And the final product! (It was an ugly face day hence the emoji).
I really love having short hair and am so pleased I decided to do this. I’ve now sent off my hair to the charity where it will hopefully be made into a wig for a little boy or girl to wear soon.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated and to my hairdresser Michelle who convinced me to cut off more than I planned to donate haha!
