My Blogging Process and Schedule

blogging routine howlindycsit

When it comes to blogging, everyone’s different. But me being nosy I love to know what other people are doing, so I thought I’d share what I do. As I mentioned in my last post about blogging, 9 Things I Hate About Blogging, it’s a lot of effort. So I thought I’d talk through my routine I use for making each blog post. The full process from conception to birth of each blog post, if you will.

1. Ideas and plan

Of course before any blog post can be written, I need the inspiration and ideas for them. I find my biggest inspiration is reading other blogs. Not to say I copy their blog posts, but just reading what other people are doing helps to get the creative juices flowing. I then write a huge list of ideas I’d like to do and figure out which are achievable. I then make a rough plan of what I’m posting and when, and get to work!

2. Photography and editing

Once I’ve decided which post I’m doing, I ALWAYS take photos first. I couldn’t imagine writing the post first, because although writing is my favourite part, the photographs add to the whole look of the post and give more direction to the writing in a way. I usually will take as many photos as I can at once, sometimes for several blog posts. This results in hundreds of photographs, but as you can see only a few make the cut hahah. I will then import the photographs from my Olympus Pen EPL7 to my iPhone for editing. I use a few different apps to edit my photos because I’m extra like that. I’ve attempted to use Lightroom before but it was far too confusing! Maybe one day I’ll up my game and learn how to use it.

3. Procreate

Once all my photos are edited I’ll decide which I want to be the covering photograph. Often I’ll add some modern calligraphy to the photo using the Procreate app on my iPad with an Apple Pencil, but sometimes I find it doesn’t suit the images. This is a step which is totally skippable but I like the personal touch it gives to my images and enjoy the process. Although it does take aaaaages till I’m satisfied with it.

4. Writing

Then comes the fun part! The writing. Like I said, the photographs help with the writing process and I feel I can flow well without interruption. I will usually do this on a different day to the photography/editing day, it’s pretty rare I will complete a whole blog post in a single day. Most of the time I’ll also decide to come back to the post a day later to proof read it with fresh eyes to check the spelling, grammar etc. and that it actually all makes sense. Sometimes I’ll even get my sister to help check it for me too as I suffer from a lot of self doubt.

5. The boring stuff

Once the blog post is complete, I then add tags, set the category and sort out the SEO – fun! If the post contains a lot of links to products or  websites I also add them in this stage too.

6. Publish/schedule

Finally at this stage the blog post is ready to either be published or scheduled for another day. Lately I’m more of a publish kinda girl but when I’m busier and need to plan posts ahead of time I’ll schedule them. And I have to say whenever I schedule a post I always forget about it and am surprised to see them on my twitter timeline hahah.

7. Share, share, share

And once it’s published and out there in the world wide web I have to share it EVERYWHERE. The posts wouldn’t be read if I didn’t share them. And this is something I really want to get better at whilst not annoying anyone following me – oops.

So as you can see it’s quite a long 7 step process, but I like to take my time with it. It’s become a routine now that I’m used to and enjoy doing. As far as a schedule goes, I’m hoping to be posting as often as I can and am currently aiming for 3 posts a week this Summer. And introducing a few quick read style posts. So you’ll be seeing a lot more of me around here!

Which is your favourite step in the routine?

Thank you for reading,
Linda
