Six things to do to your blog when you’re feeling uninspired

feeling uninspired with your blog

Oh hey! It’s me – the girl who said she was going to start blogging more often, aiming for 3 posts a week. Remember her??? Alright, slight exaggeration but it has been over a week since I last posted. I went from feeling super pumped and keen to write content to feeling well and truly uninspired. I’ve listed before all the things I hate about blogging, but the one who has been out to play this time was a weird version of Mr Writer’s Block.

I’ve had ideas, yeah. But I didn’t want to follow through with them. A huge bout of self doubt combined with a lack of both motivation and inspiration. I felt I had nothing different to add to the conversation. I well and truly lost my mojo. So I took a step back.

I didn’t attempt to capture photos or write a single sentence. I couldn’t force myself to produce content. I even ditched insta for the past week, which has done no favours to my follower count btw but hey ho.

Instead I decided to do behind the scenes tweaking of my blog. Things which I hadn’t got round to doing, but am really glad I took the time out for. Think of it as blog maintenance. So I thought I would go through everything I did as a little reminder to others to do these things regularly too.

1 – Edit your theme

Admittedly this isn’t groundbreaking. Especially coming from the girl who changes her blog theme as often as I change my socks. But rather than changing your theme, edit and tweak it to make it exactly how you like it and maybe you’ll be more motivated to use it. For example – I think I made mine a little more user friendly, ditching the categories for a popular posts section, ensuring you see the best content as well as the freshest. A quick way to make your blog feel new again.

2 – Promote your old content

Despite not writing anything new, I managed to keep my stats going thanks to the genius that is scheduled tweets. I’m quite lazy when it comes to this but after seeing a tweet by Lauren I decided to do hourly tweets promoting my previous blog posts that deserved some love – and it worked! I use the app Buffer for this.

3 – Improve the SEO and readability of  your old blog posts

When I first started my blog, I didn’t care about the boring parts like SEO and DA scores. But now they have become things which are important to me and I want to be doing the most that I can to improve them. SEO is the search engine optimisation – aka how likely it is to show up in google when searching for the key words. I use the plugin ‘Yoast SEO’ as a guide which tells me all the ways I can improve each blog post. This plugin also helps you to improve the readability of your posts, often simple things such as adding subheadings and shortening sentences. Things I didn’t think about when I first started posting. If you’re not using this, I’d highly recommend it.

4 – Check for broken links

This is something I had never done before, and luckily only one link on my blog was broken. It’s really important to check this regularly to ensure your blog is working smoothly as it can be frustrating when links don’t work. This is also something which can affect your SEO – surprise, surprise! This can easily be checked by using a plugin, the one I used is called ‘Broken Link Checker’.

5 – Read your blog

This may sound weird as obviously you wrote the posts, you know what they say. But it’s always good to go back and check your content is up to your standard and also how it looks on different devices – e.g. desktop, ipad, mobile. Is your site easy to use, do you enjoy the images and content? It’s good to experience your blog as a reader not a writer every now and then.

6 – Edit your ABOUT ME page

I think this is something most people need to do as they age. I don’t think I’d describe myself the same way as I would when I first started this blog. But it can be difficult to write about who you are, what you’re doing and why. And so I still haven’t got round to this – please don’t read it ha!

6 things to do to your blog when you're feeling uninspired

So that’s it.

After this little time off and working through these things, I’m feeling ready to go again. Although it was annoying, it was worth it in the end. And hopefully the writer’s block stays at bay.

What do you do to your blog behind the scenes?
