Three Netflix Original Films Worth Watching

netflix original films worth watching

Lately when browsing through Netflix, I couldn’t help but notice how many films and tv shows were Netflix Originals. In fact, the best things seemed to be. Anything new and fresh added seems to be from them directly. But hey, if it’s good, it’s good. And since it’s the films that have enticed me lately, I thought I’d write this post about the ones I’ve watched recently which I think were and are worth watching.

Before I Fall

This is a film I was really excited for. I bought the book and it lived on my ‘Books I’m too lazy to read‘ list for months before I somehow lost it in my move back home from uni. So there were no spoilers here. From watching the trailer the storyline was clear – a girl dies and is forced to relive her last day alive several times. No matter how differently she spends the day, it starts and ends the same way. Over and over again. Watching the film with a blank canvas meant I was extremely shook by the ending. I just didn’t see it coming. I love a good shock ending. And who doesn’t love a good teen film?

Genre – Mystery/Drama

Rating – 4.5/5

Okja is a superpig. A new breed of GM animal – made for meat – who forms a bond with her farmer’s granddaughter who in turn risks her own life to save Ojka from the forced breeding and eventual slaughter within the new meat industry. This film was insightful and emotional at times – I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me cry. Yet it still managed to be funny with a great lineup of actors. With incred scenery and filmography, and an excellent soundtrack, I’d recommend it to anyone. But be prepared to rethink your life choices afterwards lol.

Genre – Science fiction/Drama

Rating – 4/5

To The Bone

Receiving very mixed reviews this tells the story of Eli who suffers from anorexia and becomes an inpatient at a different type of recovery home. The issue lies in whether the film is glamourising the illness or simply insightful – but I’ll leave that up to you to decide. Written and directed by Marti Noxon it’s based on her own battle with anorexia whilst lead actress Lily Collins also has had personal experience with eating disorders. The film highlighted aspects of many eating disorders despite the focus being anorexia, whilst still somehow managing to be quite light. I enjoyed the film although there were some parts I didn’t like – spoilers – the romance, the epiphany and the ending. Disappointing but somehow realistic, we’re left unknowing whether she has recovered. But me being me, I want to know!! Very frustrating.

Genre – Drama/Comedy

Rating – 3.5/5
